Color in weaving can be infuriating. A beautiful palette of yarns that you spent hours choosing and even more hours weaving can capriciously decide to turn into dull mud. It’s like it’s thumbing its nose at you.
Color is frustrating because it’s complicated. It’s hard to learn on your own. There aren’t many good resources.
You might have tried some typical routes to learning about color. Maybe you wove some color gamps, only to find that they didn’t give you much insight about color. Or you read some books on color theory, only to find that they didn’t address the unique challenges that face weavers.
As a result, you may have had color disasters. To avoid those disasters, you may have limited yourself to working with color combinations you know will work - familiar palettes, or project recipes.
Maybe it’s time to break out. To master color, so you can design gorgeous cloth in the hues you really love.
And now you can.
This in-depth workshop will help you master the complexities of color in weaving, enabling you to confidently design gorgeous handwoven projects in the hues you love.

If you can't make it to a session, don't worry - you can ask questions in advance, and all sessions will be recorded so you can watch them whenever you want.
“Tien Chiu’s Color Courage for Weavers provides an excellent review of color theory. Tien then takes these concepts and applies them to weaving patterned cloth.
Her explanations of how concepts such as simultaneous contrast apply to a woven piece of cloth are clear and helpful. She also discusses traits that contribute to the feel of a design and applies color concepts to help you figure out why a design may or may not convey your intended feeling.
Mastering color theory while choosing colors for woven designs is a challenging proposition, and Tien makes the subject clear and approachable.
I think the workshop version of this course is a great way to work through the concepts with help from Tien herself.”Rebecca Mezoff, master tapestry artist, online teacher at tapestryweaving.com
“Tien’s class explores the way colours work in a way that makes sense. Her approach combines not just the science of colour but also how colour choice can set a mood, how the distance at which a textile is being viewed is important, how to scale up a design and how the impact of value will affect the cloth. She discusses how weave structures can influence how colours work together and the ratio of each colour matters. ”Laura Fry - GCW Master Weaver, author of The Intentional Weaver and Magic in the Water
“Weavers face very specific color challenges that are not addressed in more general fiber arts classes. Tien breaks down color theory into the areas weavers really need to know. She offers solid advice for how to improve upon color choices and create pieces that make your heart sing.”Liz Gipson - former Managing Editor of Handwoven, Yarnworker School of Weaving
“Concrete and inspirational color theory that will help all levels of weavers translate their ideas into creative designs. This class will entice students to try new color combinations and explore with confidence.”Katzy Luhring, Lunatic Fringe Yarns

I've distilled what I've learned into a few simple principles anyone can learn.
I'll help you confidently design gorgeous cloth in the hues you love!
What is the timing for the Workshop course?
All the instructional materials in Color Courage for Weavers - Basic (Workshop Edition) are available immediately, and I encourage you to watch them and participate in the discussion forums before the workshop begins.
The workshop component begins Saturday, January 12, 2019 when the first set of exercises will be sent out to participants. Exercises will be released every two weeks after that until all six sets of exercises have gone out.
You can complete exercises at any time, and you have "forever" access to the student forum. However, you will need to complete all your exercises by June 30, 2019 in order to get Tien's feedback on the exercises.
Do I need to weave anything for the couse?
Each set of exercises has an optional woven project to accompany it, but you do not need to weave anything for the course. (Of course, woven samples are better, but given the short timeframe of the course and the fact that everyone has busy schedules, weaving is not required.)
What equipment or materials do I need for the course?
Most of the exercises are done on a computer, so you will need some form of weaving software. If you don't want to buy weaving software for a PC, you can get a $20 subscription to Handweaving.net and use their online color editor, or you can purchase the inexpensive iOS/Android app iWeaveIt and work on your tablet.
You will need small amounts of yarn in an assortment of colors for the course. Most of these can come from your stash. If your stash is small, a gamp kit from Lunatic Fringe Yarns or a set of embroidery yarns will work nicely without breaking the bank. You'll receive instructions in the class.
How long do I have access to the course?
Forever! You can log in any time to access the course materials.
(And if the teaching platform ever goes away, you'll be able to download the full course materials - videos, everything - before it does. When I say "forever", I mean "forever"!)
What if I can't attend a live Q&A session?
Don't worry! All the sessions will be recorded, so you can view them at your leisure. And you can ask your questions from right inside the course - you don't need to be there to ask your question.
What if I have difficulty hearing?
No problem! All the videos in the course feature closed captioning. Downloadable transcripts are available for each video, and text/image summaries are included in each lesson.
People have very different learning styles, and I have tried to accommodate multiple learning styles as much as possible.
What if I'm not satisfied with the course?
I want you to be happy! If you're not satisfied, just drop me a line at email@example.com within 30 days from the time the workshop starts, and I'll refund your money. Your satisfaction matters to me!
